James J. Murphy served as vice-president (1891-1893) and president (1893-1896; 1906-1908) of Local 6 (New York City) of the International Typographical Union (ITU) and as chairman of the union's Shorter Work Day Committee. The ITU fought for the eight-hour day and six-day workweek for its members in the book, print and job shops. Its efforts culminated in the 1906 settlement between the ITU and the New York Typothetae, which guaranteed the 48-hour week to ITU members. From the descri...
